SOUTH MUSKOKA — Sources today say MAHC’s South Muskoka Memorial Hospital’s site in Bracebridge could be expanded out back as part of a healthcare restructuring.

No official announcement has been made by Muskoka Algonquin Healthcare, which has submitted its joint proposal to the province for a new hospital on Pine Street off Taylor Road overlooking  Hwy. 11 SB.

Or anything new about whether this could be partial part of the larger plan for the cross-town proposal.

Or be the final site selection for a $500 million new hospital.

The news would be a major shake up and retraction of MAHC’s plan, which is recommending two new hospitals in South Muskoka and Huntsville.

The word Sunday morning, Oct. 25, first reported by MuskokaTODAY.com comes from a medical source who said the change of heart would see expansion on the lands where the Ornge helicopters land patients.

A new location for that landing would be moved elsewhere on the present and considerably smaller lands.

But would keep SMMH downtown.

It is also an idea that advocates and critics have long suggested in recent years during the controversial planning stages.

And is being greeted by at least a couple of those happpy to hear the news.

There is no news on how or whether this would affect the Huntsville hospital site.

Or what services could be affected.

Community members following the big story have long called for the existing SMMH lands to retained by MAHC for medical or community housing uses. MAHC seemed to leaning toward selling that property during deliberations.

MuskokaTODAY.com has reached out to MAHC hospital officials seeking comment or confirmation.
