O CANADA! IT’S YOUR PARTY! MUSKOKA HAS PLENTY TO CELEBRATE CANADA DAY WITH LOTS TO DO TO MARK 158 AND 159 YEARS

Mark Clairmont | MuskokaTODAY.com

MUSKOKA — Shout it loud and proud “Canada is 159 July 1st.”

But it doesn’t look or act a day older than June 30.

That’s because at our hearts we are still who we set out to be. A free and independent country with values and achievements admired the world over.

Ask any football lover about Team Canada.

Muskoka, too, is but a year behind; yet all the same.

The district was formally opened for European settlement after the passage of the 1868 Free Grants and Homesteads Act — 158 years ago.

Depending on how you look at it, Muskoka is either a globally ancient geological marvel or a historically young, 19th-century settlement.

In terms of its geological age, the rugged terrain of the Canadian Shield and the 1,600+ lakes carved by glaciers are more than a billion years old.

And our Indigenous history began with First Nations some 10,000 years ago.

Muskoka is generally believed to take its name from Chief Mesqua Ukie (also known as Chief Yellowhead), an Ojibwe leader who hunted here in the 1850s.

Today it shares many of the same characteristics — and characters — as 1867.

Hardworking, men, women and families with up to six generations of roots who have carried on the traditions and lifestyles carved us in to what we are. Through lumbermen who were logging pioneers, boat builders, business people, tourism operators and plain folk who did everything in between to keep themselves and us alive in 2026.

So it’s easy to celebrate.

Wear red and white proudly, fly our flag, kick a soccer ball and enjoy the day.

Carpe diem! Seize the day! It’s your party.

Canada Day is a time to come together and celebrate your incredible community and natural beauty. Each year communities invite residents and visitors to join them for a day filled with festivities, great food, and unforgettable experiences.
