BRACEBRIDGE — For hockey fans longing for the days when the Toronto Maple Leafs filled the net more often than the injury list, a familiar lineup is heading back to Muskoka this winter — and they’re coming for a good cause.

The Toronto Maple Leafs Alumni will hit the ice Friday, Feb. 27, at the Muskoka Lumber Community Centre Arena, raising funds for the Children’s Foundation of Muskoka (CFM) shortly after the NHL pauses for the February Olympics in Italy.

Team Canada training camp starts after the Feb. 5 NHL break. The Olympic hockey runs in Milano Cortina Feb. 11-22. NHL games resume Feb. 25.

The Alumni exhibition game will feature Leafs legends Wendel Clark and Kris King — Muskoka residents — leading a roster that already includes former Toronto stars Rick Vaive and Todd Gill. Additional alumni are expected to be announced closer to puck drop.

“This game will serve as a great highlight for our community,” said Dave Lyons, executive director of the Children’s Foundation of Muskoka.

“It will bring people together around a shared love of hockey while making a real and lasting difference for local kids and families who need support.”

The alumni visit comes on the heels of a split weekend for the current Leafs, who posted a 7–5 win over Ottawa before dropping a 3–2 overtime decision to Detroit — a reminder of why many fans still enjoy revisiting the glory days.

Proceeds from the game will support children and youth across Muskoka who face financial barriers to participating in sports, recreation, arts programs, education and essential services.

In addition to ticket sales, sponsorship opportunities and a silent auction will help boost fundraising efforts, with all proceeds staying local.

“The impact of this event goes well beyond the rink,” Lyons said. “Every dollar raised helps open doors for young people who might otherwise miss out.”

Tickets went on sale Dec. 19 and are available online through the Children’s Foundation of Muskoka website.

Wendel Clark, right, who lives in Rosseau, is bringing the Alumni team back. He was with Jim Trelivinvg, owner of Boston Pizza and a Dragon’s Den member at the United Way and SMMHF fundraiser this summer. He summers in Lake of Bays and his son Brad Treliving is the Toronto Maple Leafs GM.
Former Maple Leafs captain Rick Vaive, left — at a golf tournament here this summer at Muskoka Bay — with fellow former Leafs Gary Leeman and Al Iafrate has also confirmed his participation. The other two fit-looking players are also welcome to bring along a stick instead of a club if they want to help the CFM fundraiser Feb. 27, says Lyons.
