GUTSY GRYPHONS GRAB GBSSA VOLLEYBALL CHAMPHIONSHIP OVER LE CARON, TO ADVANCE TO OFSSA NEXT WEEK AT HOME

GRAVENHURST — When the Gryphons celebrate their GBSSA championship from last evening they have to look back and credit their gutsy 33-31 semifinal morning marathon victory over Stayner.
Friday they won GHS’s first senior boys volleyball victory in school history beating LeCaron in four games.
It was bouceback for the Gravenhurst High School and Muskoka-Parry Sound champions in the A-level school play.
After dropping a 25-17 opening set match to the Penetang Catholic school LeCaron, the gutsy Gryphons held on to edge them 28-26.
Then with a narrow 25-22 score they broke the tie for the lead going into Game 4 of the best of five Georgian Bay championship.

By then they had regained the grit that got them there.
And easily coasted to a 25-12 final and a deserving celebration before a full gym audience.
A plaque presentation and medal ceremony.
Gryphon Cameron Bird had said after their electrifying morning defeat, which went back-and-forth on 14 extra points after it ended in a 25-25 tie, that that was “bit nerve-wracking. But a win is a win.”
The team had to have felt that way after their first loss in the championship game that took for more points to tie the series.
That’s when they dug down in to their semifinal reserves and pulled out two more thrillers that propelled them to next week’s OFSSA provincial championships at home as the Georgian Bay representative.

As hosts — along with two schools in Bracebridge and one in Huntsville — the Gryphons already had a seat at the Ontario table.
LeCaron will round out the bracket as a second team from the host region.
Seeding for the tournament will be completed Saturday for play Thursday, Friday and Saturday with the final at GHS in Gravenhurst.
