MONTH-OLD ‘SERIOUS ASSAULT’ IN GRAVENHURST LEADS TO AT LEAST ONE CHARGE

GRAVENHURST — Police have made an arrest in a month-old assault that took place in a wooded area west of Muskoka Road South.

They say today that the OPP and its Muskoka Crime Unit continue investigating the “serious assault” overnight on May 27.

And that just before midnight officers, along with Muskoka EMS, responded to reports of two people seriously assaulted.

One person was taken to hospital with serious, non-life-threatening injuries requiring ongoing treatment.

The Muskoka Crime Unit is continuing its investigation and thus far has charged 33-year-old Matthew Hughes, of Armour Township, with multiple charges, including Aggravated Assault along with multiple firearms and drug trafficking related offences.

Hughes is in custody to appear in the Ontario Court of Justice in Bracebridge on July 8, 2025.

Police say the investigation is complex, and officers are asking for the public’s assistance with information. Anyone who has information or potential evidence such as home video surveillance footage is asked to call the OPP at 1-888-310-1122.
