CITY OF KAWARTHA LAKES Two men are dead and a third male was able to swim to shore after their boat capsized here yesterday afternoon.

OPP in the City of Kawartha Lakes said early last night they are investigating the accident, which took place mid-afternoon Sunday and claimed the lives of two adult males.

Police, fire and EMS services were dispatched to Sturgeon Lake at 3:06 p.m. June 8, east of Orillia and Rama and near Bobcaygeon.

One person was able to make his way to shore while two adult males were unable to remain afloat and succumbed to their injuries.

City of Kawartha Lakes OPP (including their marine unit) along with City of Kawartha Lakes Fire, City of Kawartha Lakes EMS and OPP Aviation aided in the lifesaving and recovery measures.

The OPP says it is committed to boater education, marine patrol/law enforcement and saving lives on more than 110,000 square kilometres of Ontario waterways.

With capsized vessels and falling overboard the top contributing factors in boating deaths every year, a significant number of lives stand to be saved if boaters, personal watercraft users and paddlers wore a lifejacket or personal floatation device.

Sturgeon Lake is a popular fishing destination among the Kawartha Lakes and is located east of Orillia and Rama with community of Bobcaygeon at its north end. GRAPHIC Google images
