BARRIE If Cameron Bird and Om Patel were batting for the Blue Jays they’d be superstars like Vladimir Guerrero Jr.

With a .500 record at the boys’ doubles OFSAA badminton championships in Barrie recently, the Gravenhurst High School players continue to work their way up the Ontario school athletic ladder.

The grade 10 students, defending Parry Sound-Muskoka and GBSSA champs, played most of their games at East Bayfield Community Centre May 2-4.

Players were guaranteed four games.

Patel and Bird ended up playing six, finishing with three wins and three defeats and finally being eliminated in the B Flight consolation quarter-finals.

They were coached by GHS teacher Corry Ziorjen, with help at OFSAA from Bracebridge’s Curtis Hillman.

The pair have played doubles together, off and on, since early elementary school, and owe much of their success for their badminton beginnings to former Gravenhurst Falcons Badminton Club coach Warren Brownlee.
