PRISON INMATE DIED SUNDAY WITH ‘SIGNIFICANT INJURIES’ AT FEDERAL PRISONS IN GRAVENHURST

GRAVENHURST — A Beaver Creek inmate who suffered “significant injuries” at the federal prisons here Sunday has died.

Provincial police say they are investigating the death at the correctional facility in Gravenhurst Dec. 18.

They say that at about 9:50 p.m., OPP officers from the Bracebridge OPP detachment responded to a report from the prison that an inmate suffered “significant injuries.”

The man was transported to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead, say police.

The inmate has been identified as Leslie Ma, 31, of Alberta.

A post-mortem examination was scheduled to take place yesterday, Dec. 19, to determine the cause of death.

A police report did not say which prison the inmate belonged to — the minimum where 200 men are located or the medium, where 500 men live.

The Muskoka Crime Unit is continuing the investigation under the direction of the OPP Criminal Investigation Branch, with the assistance of the OPP Forensic Identification Services and in conjunction with the Office of the Chief Coroner for Ontario and the Ontario Forensic Pathology Service.

The OPP are responsible for investigating any potential crimes inside federal prisons in Ontario.

There are about 700 male inmates at the federal minimum and medium security prisons in Gravenhurst.
