5 LOCATIONS TO BAG YOUR OWN SAND FOR FLOODING IN GRAVENHURST

GRAVENHURST — A spring thaw has town officials preparing for the worst — as it reminds residents Mother Nature is in firm control.

The Town of Gravenhurst says in a release this Friday afternoon that the warming temperatures trend and winter snowpack runoff are again creating threatening annual high water levels in lakes and rivers.

As in previous years, it says officials are actively monitoring water levels daily.

Staff read water level gauges at Black River, Severn River Road, South Kahshe Lake, and Lake Muskoka.

And as of today, March 25, do-it-yourself sandbags are now available at these locations.

The town has established five locations where sand and fillable sandbags can be had for those residents who may be affected by high water:

  1. Cowbell Lane (at the end of the Lane) in Kilworthy
  2. Severn River Road East (at the cul-de-sac at Hwy. 11)
  3. Sunshine Court, out past Pine Lake in West Gravenhurst
  4. Muskoka Bay Park, West Gravenhurst
  5. Municipal public works yard, 1054 Crawford Rd., north Gravenhurst

The sandbags are intended for residential use only.

Officials are asking residents and visitors to be extremely diligent when venturing out near waterways, as well as travelling along roads. Conditions can change quickly, sometimes in a matter of a few hours.

DIY sandbagging is available as of Friday to protect your property against annual spring flooding in Gravenhurst. So dig in at any of five locations across town.
