GRAVENHURST — A third town has joined Muskoka municipal partners in an act of unity for victims of this week’s Russian invasion.
“The Town of Gravenhurst has raised the Ukrainian flag at town hall to demonstrate solidarity and instil hope and strength to our Ukrainian-Canadian community.”
In a release today, Mayor Paul Kelly and members of council says have raised the besieged country’s national flag at its municipal office “as a symbol of support and solidarity.”
“The Town of Gravenhurst stands with the people of Ukraine, their families, and our Ukrainian-Canadian community in Ontario.
“While this may be a small gesture, we want to show Ukrainians that we stand behind them in a big way and hope that peace will soon be restored to the region,” Kelly is quoted as saying.
“Together, the Town of Gravenhurst and members of council stand with the Canadian government and our leaders across the globe in a plea to end these concerning and aggressive actions against Ukraine.”
On the weekend Bracebridge lit up the Bracebridge Fall with blue and yellow lighting.
Monday night Huntsville’s council voted unanimously to lower the Russian flag at its G8 Park.
It was taken down at 8 a.m. this morning.
This is the second time the flag has been lowered. In 2014 the town did it the first time when Russia invaded Crimea. The flag was back up a year later by a vote of council.
Mayor Karen Terziano says the same could happen again any time council votes to do so.
She says the town of 20,000 has many residents of Ukrainian ancestry.
