SNOWMOBILER HITS TREE TODAY, AIRLIFTED TO HOSPITAL IN TORONTO

LAKE OF BAYS — A snowmobiler was airlifted to hospital in Toronto late this morning after hitting a tree near Oxtongue Lake.

Provincial police say this afternoon that they were dispatched at 10:40 a.m., Feb. 24, to a report of a snowmobile crash on Ontario Federation of Snowmobile Clubs (OFSC) trail D101B. It is northwest of Highway 60, in the area of Oxtongue Lake, in the Township of Lake of Bays. And just east of Dwight.

Officers from the OPP’s Huntsville detachment and Central Region OPP, Snowmobile ATV Vessel Enforcement Unit (SAVE) members accompanied by emergency services, attended the scene.

At the scene they found an injured woman who was operating a snowmobile that had left the trail and struck a tree.

The 60-year-old was transported by Ornge air ambulance to a Toronto area hospital with “life-altering injuries,” says the police release.

They say snowmobile safety remains an important part of the OPP’s public safety mandate and its provincial traffic safety program.

This is at least the eighth serious snowmobile accident locally this winter.
