2 GRAVENHURST CASES AMONG 42 TUESDAY, SAYS HEALTH UNIT

SIMCOE-MUSKOKA — Gravenhurst had Muskoka’s only 2 COVID cases today.

They were among 42 reported by the health unit this afternoon, which also 10 active cases remain at Muskoka Shores LTC in Gravenhurst: 5 residents and 5 staff as of an outbreak declared April 23.

The latest cases were:

  1. Gravenhurst man, 45-64, community acquired, reported May 17, first episode May 15
  2. Gravenhurst woman, 18-34, outbreak related, reported May 14, first episode May 13

One other Gravenhurst person was removed from the health unit list to another health unit or was considered a duplicate case.

Elsewhere in Ontario, the province reported 1,616 cases and 17 deaths.

Public Health Ontario said Simcoe-Muskoka had 38 cases.

Toronto 472, York 116 and Peel 360.

Meanwhile, more than 183,000 people at 18+ logged on in the first two hours after 8 a.m. today to book vaccine appointments.

HEALTH UNIT HIGHLIGHTS:

  • 11,446 cases to date.
  • 70 new cases this week, 338 last week, which was a 24% drop from 444 the week beginning May 2
  • 19 deaths in May, 25 in April, 12 in March. There have been 14 COVID-19 deaths so far in May among Simcoe Muskoka residents.
  • 3,388 cases have been UK variants, 87 from Brazil), 19 from South Africa, 1 from India
  • 711 cases are awaiting second testing for the type of variant
  • 272,138+ vaccines have been administered in Simcoe Muskoka
  • 253,000+ people living in Simcoe Muskoka have received their first vaccine, 42% of the population
The health unit is reporting 11,446 total cases as of today – and no new deaths.

IN OTHER COVID NEWS …

  • Businesses are chomping at the bit for a federal re-opening plan, with 61 industry leaders writing to the prime minister calling for a timetable.
  • Federal Innovation Minister François-Philippe Champagne announced $200 million today for a vaccine plant in Mississauga to expand an existing site owned by Resilience Biotechnologies Inc. to provide “made-in-Canada solutions such as vaccines and treatments for future pandemics.”
  • India’s plight continues to worsen with 25 million deaths, including 4,329 today. Cases, though, were down to 263,000.
