$50,000 house fire on Southwood Road Saturday

GRAVENHURST — A $50,000 fire could have been worse this morning in south Gravenhurst after a smoke detector alerted the home owner just before 8 a.m. today.

Gravenhurst Fire crews were called out just before 8 a.m. today for a structure fire on Southwood Rd.

Gravenhurst Fire was called to a basement blaze at a residence Saturday morning.

They say that crews from stations 1 and 2 responded to a reported structure fire at 1056 Southwood Rd. in Gravenhurst.

“The homeowner was working in her yard at the time and was alerted to the problem by a smoke alarm activation inside,” said Todd Clapp, Deputy Fire Chief.

“Early detection by the homeowner and a quick response by fire crews limited the fire spread and it was contained to the basement area,” he added.

Clapp said the investigation is ongoing but it appears to be electrical in nature.

He added homeowners are reminded that plumbing and electrical equipment should be checked on a regular basis to ensure it is working correctly and serviced by professionals.
