GRAVENHURST COVID OUTBREAK AMONG 25 CASES REPORTED WEDNESDAY

SIMCOE-MUSKOKA — A new outbreak in Gravenhurst has a middle-aged woman among just more than two dozen COVID cases the health unit is reporting today.

The female, aged 45-64, had her first episode yesterday, Feb. 9, when it was reported by the Simcoe-Muskoka District Health Unit (SMDH).

The health unit reports 25 cases and 5,810 total cases; while Public Health Ontario reports 29 cases today and 5,865 cases to date.

A previous Muskoka Lakes case was moved to another health unit by SMDHU.

While there were no new deaths reported, there have been 11 related deaths the first week of February.

Meanwhile, Ontario is reporting 1,072 cases (41 deaths), Toronto 393, Peel 196 and York 125.

HEALTH UNIT HIGHLIGHTS:

  • SMDHU says 23,066 vaccines have been distributed, with 897 of them yesterday.
  • To date 133 local cases have been tested positive for the COVID-19 variant of concern UK B.1.1.7 and an additional 86 cases have screened positive (awaiting confirmatory testing)
  • There have been 77 new cases reported to the health unit for the current week. There were 280 new cases reported to the health unit last week, 10 per cent lower than the 305 cases reported the week before that.
  • In January 88 Simcoe residents died, which is more than four times higher than the 8 in December.
