FREEDOM OF THE PRESS ISN’T FREE IN A FREE SOCIETY
Mark Clairmont | MuskokaTODAY.com
MUSKOKA — Have you read today?
Have you read a newspaper?
Have you read news online?
Have you enjoyed reading the news?
Have you read TODAY.com?
Have you been in the news?
Have you enjoyed reading the news?
Have you paid for that privilege?
Have you bought at subscription?
Have you bought an ad?
Ten things to think about this week, during National Newspaper Week.
Freedom of the press doesn’t mean the news is free.
The price is not having it.
Don’t take freedom of the press for granted.
Without a professional press to cover elections, fight fake news and corporate spin, Canadian readers and democracy are at risk.
The fourth estate has changed the world for the good.
And it’s not over. We’ve got to cover climate change, strikes … and more.

Newspapers — credible newspapers — have always been essential to democracy anywhere in the world where it is attempting to thrive. In our case, your newspaper is essential. I read it every day. And I pay for it by subscribing. I also read all of Sarah Law’s article in the Gravenhurst Banner. With these two sources of information, both by trusted journalists, I feel that I have a chance of learning about important issues and staying informed. I thank you particularly Mark, because you probably have hundreds of readers who are not subscribers. Sarah is hopefully paid a good wage for doing what she does so well. You do NOT receive a wage for doing what you do, Mark, and you do it so thoroughly and without complaint, that I can only say “Thank you” and send my support through a subscription to Muskoka Today.
