RED ZONE COULD OPEN DOOR TO VACCINE LOCALLY FASTER

SIMCOE-MUSKOKA — An interesting fallout from today’s announcement about moving to a red zone is that it could help expedite the vaccine distribution locally to front-line health care workers — a day before its rollout in Toronto and Ottawa.

That’s according to the province this afternoon.

It says in a release that based on per capita allocations, the expected 90,000 Pfizer-BioNTech doses received from the federal government will be delivered to up to 14 hospital sites in Grey-Lockdown and Red-Control zones in December, to vaccinate health care workers in hospitals, long-term care homes, retirement homes and other congregate settings caring for seniors.

A couple of those are facilities severely impacted by cases of COVID and which have seen special oversight ordered by the health unit.

Simcoe and Muskoka will move into the red zone Monday.

The first vaccine could end up in some local arms the next 28 days as the region moved into the red zone, according to the province.
