MUSKOKA — Looks like Matheus Johnstone is Muskoka’s newest resident — born in Muskoka.
After Orillia Soldiers’ Memorial Hospital announced Thursday the birth of Valley Brown at 6:45 a.m. Jan. 1, Muskoka Algonquin Healthcare (MAHC) said today Jan. 5 that it was delighted to introduce its first baby born in 2026.
Derrick and Melanie Johnstone welcomed their new addition, Matheus Johnstone, at 3:40 a.m. New Year’s Day, 2026, at 8 pounds 2.5 ounces.
Congratulations to both happy families.
While the Browns were camera shy, the Johnstones, too, requested the birth hospital and their residence not be shared.

That beautiful baby was born at emergency in South Muskoka Memorial Hospital because he couldn’t wait to be transferred to Huntsville. My daughter-in-law was in the hospital at the time and she said it was quite a scramble. I overheard that no babies are to be born at South Muskoka Memorial Hospital. That came from the CEO. I feel like she is working against SMMH to reduce it to a small emergency transfer station for Orillia and Huntsville. That is my gut feeling! But the community has been standing together to stop her.
