GRAVENHURST — A massive, million-dollar waterfront cottage fire here early last evening on Cliff Bay had Gravenhurst firefighters on the scene until well into the night.
And had them calling in mutual aid from the Bracebridge Fire Department for backup.
It’s also apparentley a second time for a fire at the property, which was not at 1001 Old Portage Road as was widely reported by others online, says the longtime current neighbourig owner who lives next to the fire.
The owner and correct address of the burnt property hasn’t yet been identified.
A GFD social media channel reported at 6:40 p.m. Sunday Jan. 4 that: “Crews continue to battle this fire. Nobody was home and no injuries have been reported. Old Portage Road and Brydons Bay Road past Camp Shalom are closed for tanker shuttle operations, please avoid the area.”
At 10:30 p.m. they posted this update: “The bulk of fire operations have been completed. A small fire crew and apparatus will remain on site overnight. Residents in the area may continue to see smoke and smell fire.”
Fire crews also had to work with water challenges before resorting to the lake as a backup resource.
They can be overheard on video saying “… we’re going to lose all our water fast…” referring to their pumper trucks on shore.
CORRECTION: A previous version of this story referred to it as a B&B, which according to Google was operated by the previous owner says the neighbour whose home address was incorrectly referred to.
