CLOSE BALL, MISSED CALL ENDS GRITTY GRYPHONS’ OFSSA VOLLEYBALL DREAM THIS MORNING

MUSKOKA — A close ball and missed call were a missed opportunity for the Gryphons to make history by possibly advancing to the championship round of the OFSSA finals tomorrow.

Their senior boys morning game at Friday with Red Lake was a thriller that could have gone either way at BMLSS.

The Rams took the deciding set late in Game 2 of a match that was within a few points of either team winning.

But a missed line call down deep in the corner of the visiting team’s end of the court cost the Gravenhurst team a crucial point as they mounted yet another gutsy comeback in the fourth game of Pool C round-robin play.

And allowed the NWOSSAA champ to score their third-game victory before going on to win their fourth pool game also later in Bracebridge.

Both teams then returned to GHS late this afternoon in the second round provincial quarter-final play.

The Gryphons lost that one after being relegated to the consolation round of the  championships in quarterfinal playdowns.

The host school played gritty, hard ball as usual, but succumbed in two games to the Windsor representative E.S.C. E.J. Lajeunesse who had won the SWOSSAA regionals.

Meanwhile, the Rams came up against the OFSSA tournament’s No. 1 seed E.S. Macdonald-Cartier — who lost their only game so far in an upset to E.S.C. Plantagnet who won their Pool A grouping.

Semifinal action continues Saturday at 9 a.m. at both GHS and BLMSS.

With bronze medal game at 3 p.m. at GHS followed by the gold OFSSA title game at 5 p.m.

NOTES:

  • Marilyn Simone says driving six hours to see her son and grand-son on the Red Lake team was better than 20 hours or more. She lives in southwestern Ontario and the team came down from Red Lake near the Manitoba border. Her son Richard Radford is the coach and his son Richard (“RJ) is one of 10 players on the team.
