GRAVENHURST — Ah nuts!

That could be the Vertex Vixens who played five games yesterday — including an extra inning semi-final — only to lose the inaugural Gravenhurst Women’s Softball championship to Kelsey Gliddon the regular season winning powerhouse.

The champs only had to play a pair of games Saturday, the final day of the two-day championship playoffs, based on their top season finish.

But they’ll take it after losing last year to Mother Tucker’s in the final of the former league.

They happily embraced the glistening trophy after the 5 p.m. game — when it was laughingly nearly lost when playful kids filled the gold cup with acorns slightly damaging it as it sat outside the screen behind home plate joked co-league president Tara Morley.

KG won the new league title with a convincing 13-7 win with aggressive base running in only their third year together.

The Vixens, meanwhile, had it all together with plenty of pracitice after advancing from Friday night play with a win over JAC. Then it was an endurance test for them with five games yesterday — starting at 8 a.m. — and the exciting extra-inning 16-13 victory over Mother Tucker in the 4 p.m.

Which set up the big final viewed by a crowd that all-night and day filled the two bleacher stands and large standing room crowd gathered around the Gull Lake Rotary Park diamond that had a familial party-like picnic atmosphere.

A league banquet followed the curling club in the evening with an awards ceremony.
