WEATHER FORECAST ‘WARMER, WETTER, WILDER,’ ROTARY SPEAKER PHILLIPS WILL WARN IN TALK APRIL 17 AT OPERA HOUSE

GRAVENHURST — An election is perfect time to spring forward today on World Meteorological Day.

Two days after sap season began the World Meteorological Organization wants to remind Canadians and all countries of the importance of climate change.

No doubt a global crisis that is already on the campaign trail with the Liberals dropping the carbon tax and the Conservatives saying it will emerge elsewhere.

Indeed it looks like Canada’s reduction targets won’t be met — not unlike many large emitters.

The impact will be “warmer, wetter, wilder winters,” says David Phillips, senior climatologist emeritus for Environment Canada.

And that’s just half the year.

There’s more to come and you can hear about it April 17 when the Gravenhurst Rotary Club welcomes him to the Opera House for a noon-hour talk.

The WMO, an organization of the United Nations, was created on 23 March 1950 to replace the International Meteorological Organization. It began operations in 1951 to coordinate member nations in the fields of meteorology, operational hydrology, and Earth sciences for the security of their population. The first World Meteorological Day was held on 23 March 1961.

The Barrie resident knows of what he speaks after 58 years watching and studying weather patterns, which he says climatologists like him have long warned, will threaten existence.

Tickets for the talk are $15 + seat charges.
