BALA — A 25-year-old man died early this morning in downtown Bala following accident involving an OPP cruiser.

Police say the pedestrian was struck and killed shortly before 6 a.m. Sunday, Sept. 29, on Muskoka Road 169 in Muskoka Lakes Township.

He was transported to hospital where he later died from his injuries.

The officer was also taken hospital as a precaution.

The OPP has ensured that victim services has been engaged for the male’s family. Resources are also in place for the officer involved.

Muskoka Road 169 was closed between Sutton Drive and Bala Falls Road for the investigation by an OPP Collision Reconstructionist and members of the Traffic Collision Investigation Team.

That is the section at the east end of Bala near the road to Wahta First Nation, the Kee to Bala, the Bala Bay and Windsor Park.

And traffic was slowed through much of the highway, drivers say as far as back in to Gravenhurst.

As a result of an officer’s involvement in this incident, the OPP has notified the Special Investigations Unit which has invoked its mandate to investigate.

The SIU is asking any witnesses, or anyone with more information or video of the incident, to contact investigators.

Three investigators, three forensic investigators and one collision reconstructionist have been assigned to the case, the police release said.

More details of the accident were not released as late this afternoon.

Police would only say the accident, before 6 a.m. involving an OPP cruiser and a pedestrian, happened downtown somewhere between Sutton Drive and the Bala Falls.
