MIDLAND — The Muskoka Bears continue to hold off the opposition in the second period, again stopping Midland for a period Wednesday.
But the PJHL’s newest team this season also couldn’t score then when needed.
In a one-minute gap they gave up two goals in the opening stanza.
If not for that 60 seconds this game could have ended up different.
It was the same story as against Hanover Sunday, when the Bears held Hanover scoreless in the second 20 before hanging on for an OT shootout win.
However, again in the in first and third periods in Midland two nights ago that was when the game was won or lost.
The Flyers went up 2-0 in the opening 20 minutes scoring at 12:50 and followed a minute later at 13:50.
The Bears regained their composure holding them in check the following 20 as both teams failed to score.
Midland made it 3-0 at 1:03 of the third, before Muskoka got on the scoreboard with Carter Pallister replying at 10:51.
The Flyers rounded out the scoring in 7 seconds into the final minute of the game for a 4-1 victory.
Penalties plagued both team, including a pair of 10-minute unsportsmanlike conducts in the second when Muskoka’s Gavin Darlow and Midland’s Thomas King were assessed.
Total team penalties saw 6 in the first, 9 in the second and 10 in the third — including the last one against the Bears’ Mason Taylor-Wood who received a double 4-minute penalty for spearing at 19:10. That was on the first shift after Midland’s fourth goal.
Midland out-shot Muskoka 30-20.
It was the third pre-season exhibition game for the Bears after an opening 7-3 loss to Orillia.
The Bears are 1-2 so far their first preseason.
They will try to even their record tomorrow night against Penetanguishene with the help of a hometown crowd in their first game at the new Muskoka Lumber Community Centre.
