ORILLIA SILVER BAND ‘AT HOME’ THIS SUNDAY IN CONCERT AT GRAVENURST OPERA HOUSE

Mark Clairmont | MuskokaTODAY.com

GRAVENHURST — It’s been too long since the Orillia Silver Band played the Opera House.

In the intervening years the band and their audience have grown to appreciate each other more as their average ages merge.

Sunday, Oct. 15, the OSB brings their inspiring, enthusiastic music north for truly an event worth attending as the 28 members of the brass band takes the stage for another Muskoka Concert Association production.

Many of them — including conductor Neil Barlow — reside in Muskoka.

So it’s not a musical stretch for them to perform “locally at home.”

Not unfamiliar, they’ve played sell-out concerts this spring accompanying Huntsville pianist Kyung-A Lee at the Algonquin Theatre where a few years ago the OSB also honoured Huntsville’s celebrated Anglo Canadian Leather Band.

This weekend Barlow and band return for a 2 p.m. concert.

The MCA has hosted this exceptional band in past years and, as usual, their current line-up has much to delight almost everyone:

  • Light Cavalry Overture, by Franz von Suppe
  • Pavane, by Gabriel Faure
  • Symphony #1, first movement, by Beethoven
  • Las Lluvias Grandes, Latin-style music by Peter Graham
  • Railroad Trilogy, by Gordon Lightfoot, arrangement by Robert Redhead
  • Lord of the Rings, a selection from the soundtrack by Howard Shore

MCA president Diane Harrop, speaking from personal experience, promises this show to be a “particularly wonderfully uplifting and entertaining concert.”
And as usual she invites concertgoers to their popular pre-show hors d’œuvres and conversation in Trillium Court. The reception begins at 1 p.m.

You can purchase your tickets on line at www.gravenhurstoperahouse.com or by calling the Opera House at 705-687-5550.

Call for volunteers

MCA says it could still use just a few more volunteers to help on the Sunday afternoon of the concert.
Please consider lending a hand.  At the time of the concert, the shear volume of simple little tasks can be daunting for a few people but quite enjoyable when 1 or 2 more step up to help.  If willing, simply connect directly with me, Diane, at {[email protected]} to discuss what we hope for.
As always, we urge you to share this email with your friends in the hope that they will join us.  Attendance is critical to our survival.  Previous concert attendees indicate that it is a win-win opportunity … friends will get some great entertainment at astoundingly low prices and MCA will get more people in the seats to keep costs per person low.  Note that at the bottom of every page of our website (www.muskokaconcertassociation.com) is an opportunity for you to effortlessly join our mailing list.  As well, there is also the opportunity there to easily recommend us to your friends.  If you do choose to recommend us, they will have the opportunity to opt in/our before (and after!) being added permanently.
On behalf of the entire executive of MCA, we hope you enjoy the incomparable beauty of our fall Muskoka. Stay safe and healthy and look after each other. In the meantime, we are negotiating some amazing concerts for 2024 and will keep you posted as details crystallize.

With much respect and appreciation for your support, Diane Harrop, volunteer board chair of the Muskoka Concert Association, established 1947.
