SUMMER TIME AND LIVIN’ IS MUSIC: CANADA DAY TWICE WITH MCB; SUNDAY AFTERNOON BIFOCALS IN GRAVENHURST

MUSKOKA — Canada Day Saturday kicks off a busy day, weekend and summer of music across Muskoka.

Tilt your head, raise an ear and you’ll pop, rock, classical and more.

July 1 the Muskoka Concert Band, led by Fran Harvey, kicks off a busy day a 9 a.m. at the opening of Heritage Village in Huntsville where you get your first taste of cake.

You’ll hear their program of called “Songs and Stage,” which will feature music from some of our favourite musicals like “Beauty and the Beast,” “Aladdin,” “Mary Poppins,” and “Jersey Boys.”

Along with some songs from all types of music from selections from the opera “Carmen” to “Blue Tango” to fabulous band overtures.

Two of their soloists will be featured as well. Kim Barlow will play solo clarinet on “A Tribute to Artie Shaw” and Neil Barlow will play the hauntingly beautiful Adagio from Rodrigo’s “Concerto d’Aranjuez.”

There will even be some Beatles music and a little “Blues Brothers” on the menu.

Each concert is a little different so why not plan to come to all of them?!

At 2 p.m. the MCB will be at Memorial Park in Bracbridge for the same full concert in the band shell.

Bifocals Sunday Trinity United Church

On Sunday many of the same band members will be playing with the Bifocals Band at Trinity United Church at 2 p.m., under the direction of Kim Barlow.

It’s their “Salute to Summer” with an equally wide range of musical styles that includes

classics from Robert Sheldon, John Phillip Sousa, George Gershwin, Leroy Anderson, Motown and Henry Mancini and Santana.

A treat is their clarinet ensemble, Women of the Woods, with some of their

favourite tunes as well.

A donation of $20 is suggested and children 12 years old and under get to hear and be inspired for free.
