SCHOOL CHRISTMAS CONCERTS STILL GREAT FAMILY FUN AFTER ALL THESE YEARS

BRACEBRIDGE — The best thing about school concerts — though the singing and dancing are great, too — is the kids and parents waving at each other.
Take last night’s primary seasonal celebration at Macaulay Public School.
It’s hard to tell who enjoyed it the most — the beaming kids searching out family in the auditorium?
Or the moms and dad eyeing their young talents on stage with one hand while balancing their cellphones with the other trying to preserve the precious moment to share on social media or with others at home or grandparents unable to attend.
Both were giddy with love.
Between big bows to their knees that almost toppled some boys sending them head over heels; and cute curtsies by girls in dresses and who looked like Nutcracker ballerinas — they sang their little hearts out.
Silver bells in their hands it was Jingle Bells, a well-done xylophone number and a rap version of another cool yule classic — complete with shades.
But the carol that drew the most laughs involved tapping out the tune using pool noodles and bonking kids kneeling in front wearing hockey helmets.
The senior student emcees even got in on the act sharing jokes while introducing class performers: “What’s the favourite food of Santa’s helpers?”
“Elf-abit soup.”
Typical grade school humour and fun for all the performers — most who were getting their first taste of the stage after COVID.
And that luckily hasn’t changed for ever.
As a finale they got to shout out Rudolph’s name. The ninth reindeer who could have been put to good use to guide everyone to the school and safely home on a snowy night.
