TACKLE SHARE LETS YOU EXPERIENCE CANADA’S VAST LANDSCAPE FOR FREE

MUSKOKA — Go fish isn’t just fun summer card game for kids.

It’s a serious business, hobby and fun way to wile away hours of patient time.

With more than a million lakes, rivers and streams plus three oceans, Canada boasts one of the most diverse natural environments.

Reel in hand fishing is an opportunity to experience our vast landscape.

National Fishing Week, which ends this weekend, is supported by Catch Fishing — a national program dedicated to encouraging Canadians to get outdoors and enjoy our angling heritage year-round. It is supported by federal, provincial and territorial governments, as well as hundreds of organizations and businesses that work hard to ensure sustainable fishing opportunities while safeguarding fish populations nationally.

A fun way to get in on the popular pastime is to visit a number of sites where poles and gear can be borrowed.

One is the Gravenhurst Library, which has four rods and reels and tackle boxes available for loan. Other loan sites can be found here.

There’s even a young angler’s licence — although if you’re under 18 you don’t need one. Different provinces may have age restrictions for a licence.

See also the Ontario Federation of Anglers and Hunters website here for more on the Tackle Share program.

And see you can land a big or small one, brag about the one that got away and how large a mouth that bass had.

You gotta be on your toes like Alex Hogg when casting for the big ones if you want bragging rights. Photo Mark Clairmont
Librarian Mandy Dart tests the rod and reel before checking it out on loan at the Gravenhurst Library where they are one of dozens of the free Tackle Share sites.
