DIGGING IN ON EARTH DAY SEEDS POSITIVE PLANETARY PATHWAY

GRAVENHURST — Cars and trucks — many hauling trailers — lined up on Earth Day Thursday morning for free compost.
All of them had shovels and a desire to do good for their gardens and the planet.
The popular town giveaway at the Muskoka Wharf saw drivers and their vehicles out early checking out the site before they were allowed to dig in for as much of the years-old yard and compost waste they could take away.
Thirteen dump trucks of dark, rich mulch were left in a dozen piles behind the condos on Lake Muskoka, said town parks worker Kyla Scott who opened the flood gates at 10 a.m. for eager earthlings.
For many it was a return to sender, as their laudable green bin efforts over the years at putting out yard waste and table scraps paid off as they took home top soil and replaced it on the same ground as where it had been picked up by the district.
As eager earthlings dug in it was more obvious that 2022 has brought about a greater understanding of the urgency climate change.
Across Muskoka students hit the streets with bags picking up trash dumped or dropped by too many shameful litters who sadly still don’t get it.
Elementary school students found a little in their own backyards.
Gravenhurst High School students armed with green plastic (?) bags did likewise around town.
Wherever, an appreciation for the fate of the planet was evident and is revealing itself with those tiny, positive steps.
And it’s translated in to a more mobile society as people are walking more and leaving getting outside of gas guzzlers.
Though there remain too many pickup drivers who continue to put the pedal to the metal, wasting gas and burning up the environment with annoying mufflers.
Many of them flying Canadian flags from their tailgates.
For the fortunate ones who took away top soil for gardens and around their yards the compost giveaway literally seeded a new more positive future planetary green pathway.
