COVID CASES ARE STILL ON CLIMB IN REGION DURING MARCH BREAK

SIMCOE-MUSKOKA — The two-day COVID total by the health unit shows 196 new cases since it last reported on Monday.
The province posted 150 cases for those same days.
Both show daily increases this week.
Today the Simcoe Muskoka District Health Unit (SMDHU) reports 193 cases for this week (Sunday, Monday and Tuesday).
It also reports 16 in hospital with 6 in ICU.
And 4 more people have died.

HEALTH UNIT HIGHLIGHTS:
- 36,778 confirmed cases to date
- 193 cases this week
- 435 last week, 12% lower than the 493 cases the week before
- 11 deaths in March, 51 in February, 74 in January
- From July 18th to March 15th, the rate of COVID-19 hospitalizations among the unvaccinated vaccine-eligible Simcoe Muskoka population is 4 times higher than it is for those who have received at least two vaccine doses, the rate of COVID-19 ICU admissions is 8 times higher and the rate of deaths is 3 times higher.
- 1,278,417 vaccines have been administered
- 497,314 residents have received at least one vaccine, which represents 81% of the total population
- 85% of the population 5+ have had at least one vaccine, including 81% of youth 12 to 17 years
- 49% of children 5 to 11 have also received at least one vaccine
