UPDATE: SNOWMOBILER CRAWLS FROM LAKE AFTER GOING THROUGH NEAR BALA TODAY
Mark Clairmont | MuskokaTODAY.com
BALA — A snowmobiler who crawled out of the water Saturday afternoon after going through the ice in Lake Muskoka has been safely located.
Police say they received a call at 2:18 p.m. Saturday reporting a sledder escaping an icy plunge.
Bystanders watched the man get out of the water and crawl toward the Apiary Road area at the south end of Acton Island east of Bala.
The OPP believed the male was picked up and are seeking more information regarding the driver of the snowmobile.
They ask that if anyone has information regarding this accident to call them at 1-888-310-1122.
Police released the accompanying photo with a release this afternoon.
On Monday, Jan. 31, the OPP said they received numerous calls from the public in regards to this incident. We have identified the operator of the snow machine and he is in good health.
Their investigation continues.
They remind snowmobile enthusiasts that current ice conditions are not safe for travelling on.
They add it is understandable that operators are anxious to be out enjoying their snow vehicles but for everyone’s safety, please err on the side of caution. An ice rescue, should an emergency occur, creates a dangerous situation for firefighters, paramedics and police.
