BARRIE — A tornado that touched down here about 2:30 p.m. this afternoon has landed several people in hospital.
Royal Victoria Regional Health Centre (RVH) says it is providing care for eight patients who suffered minor injuries as a result of the severe storm in the south end of the city.
Other reports say four people were seriously injured.
Online images showed roofs ripped off and significant damage to neighbourhoods, including downed wires and widespread debris scattered across streets.
Hospital staff are working closely with County of Simcoe Paramedic Services, Barrie Police Service and Barrie Fire and has staff and physicians on standby should extra resources be required.
“Our team is highly skilled and trained to handle emergency situations as this,” says Janice Skot, RVH president and CEO.
“We are ready to provide whatever level of care and support needed. In fact, we have deployed a physician and nurse to the area to assist with determining if someone needs further care in our Emergency department. Our thoughts go out to the families and businesses impacted by the storm.”
Social media lit up with pictures and videos, including this close-up view below.
It’s not the first tornado scare. Lake of Bays may have been hit Tuesday night along with Elmvale.
