GRAVENHURST — Prison contraband worth more than $100,000 destined for Beaver Creek inmates has been seized by police and correctional service officers.

Provincial police say today that last Wednesday OPP with its Muskoka Community Street Crime Unit and the Beaver Creek Correctional Institute officers confiscated multiple packages containing the contraband and unauthorized items destined for inmates.

They seized a large quantity of drugs, tobacco, cell phones and phone accessories.

They say the haul has an estimated institutional value of $105,700.

OPP from the Bracebridge detachment are continuing the investigation to determine who was responsible, says a release Monday.

It adds that the Correctional Service of Canada (CSC) has measures in place to prevent both contraband and unauthorized items from entering its institutions in order to help ensure a safe and secure environment for everyone. And that CSC works in partnership with the police to take action against those who attempt to introduce contraband and/or unauthorized items into correctional institutions.

CSC has set up a telephone tip line for all federal institutions so that it may receive additional information about activities relating to security at CSC institutions. These activities may be related to drug use or trafficking that may threaten the safety and security of visitors, inmates and staff members working at CSC institutions.

The toll-free number, 1 866 780 3784, helps ensure that the information shared is protected and that callers remain anonymous.

Beaver Creek prison officials and the OPP intercepted drugs, tobacco and phones destined for inmates July 7.
