GREEN PARTY HOSTS RIDING TOWN HALL WEDNESDAY NIGHT

PARRY SOUND-MUSKOKA — A riding town hall tonight to talk about issues of importance to local constituents will be hosted by the Green Party of Ontario.
Leader Mike Schreiner, the MPP for Guelph, will be joined by Matt Richter the party’s nominee for Parry Sound-Muskoka MPP who has represented the Greens in local elections since 2007.

It will feature a roundtable question-and-answer format to address topics and areas of most concern to them in next year’s provincial election.
“Our constituents are facing some of the most challenging times in our riding’s history,” Richter says in a release.
“As we look to move forward from the pandemic year, it’s time to ask ourselves what the future of our riding could, and should, look like, and how we can move forward to a stronger, more caring, more resilient future for everyone. We’ll envision that better future together.”
The roundtable is one of a series of Green Party Ontario town halls covering everything from dignity for seniors and systemic racism to childcare and education. It is the first town hall in that series specifically dedicated to a single riding.
Yesterday, Schreiner issued the following statement on the province’s plan to further study northern passenger rail service.
“I welcome today’s announcement on the Northeastern Passenger Rail. The transit needs of the North have long been ignored, and it’s about time the government started to address this important issue.
“But according to Ford’s plan, train service won’t begin until the middle of this decade at the earliest.
“Greyhound’s recent shutdown exposed the huge gaps in interregional transit in Ontario, leaving many Ontarians — particularly lower-income individuals, students, those in rural and remote areas and First Nations communities — out of options. These people can’t wait half a decade.
“Instead of re-announcing what was already announced in the March budget, I’m calling on Premier Ford to get to work, make interregional transit a priority and provide northern communities with the transit options they deserve.”
Richter has been hosting his own live Zoom events with Parry Sound-Muskoka constituents this spring, which he will continue through fall.
About Matt Richter, Green Party Candidate for MPP, 2022
He sees the 2022 election as “our greatest challenge and our greatest opportunity.” Combating the climate crisis and building a more caring economy as we recover from COVID is imperative.
Since his first run for office 14 years ago, he and his team have grown Green Party of Ontario support in the riding to 20% of the vote, which is second only to Mike Schreiner, leader and the party’s only MPP, in Guelph.
