BEWARE INSOMNIACS PUTTING OUT TRASH TONIGHT TO BEAT HEAT

MUSKOKA — You better stay up late tonight — or get up early tomorrow — if you want your blue box, green bin and garbage bags picked up.
As of this week you could miss your waste collector if it’s not out by 7 a.m.
Unless you put it out overnight, are an insomniac or are an early riser.
It may also be an opportunity to get in on the new fad of “pandemic thrifting,” the urban art enjoyed by sustainable treasure hunters in search of bargains left o the streets.
Due to labour shortages and over-heated workers, the District of Muskoka is ordering residents to be curbside an hour earlier than in the past.
IMPORTANT REMINDER: COVID masks, gloves and other PPE go in the garbage.
On the district website Friday they defended their controversial decision again, saying: “We’re working closely with our contractor to find better and more efficient ways of
getting your waste collected. We need your help!
“We are working hard to make sure material is collected on time on your scheduled collection day.”
They say it’s “necessary for crews to begin earlier as we are managing more garbage and recycling each week and additional time is needed daily to complete routes.
“It’s less busy in the early morning and drivers won’t need to compete with traffic and parked cars in our urban areas. An early start will also help on hot weather days – our drivers collect garbage manually and it’s cooler in the morning to get a head-start on their day.”
To which critics argue: Why not then contain the new hour to downtowns?
Which everyone knows are so busy early these days.
So, what do you do if you miss your man — or is there a garbage woman?
The district says it is working closely with its contractor, Waste Connections of Canada, which is continues to experience labour challenges, ultimately impacting the number of drivers and trucks on the road each day.
They say they’ve hired another collection company to help fill empty routes.
If you miss pick-up or have collection concerns go to www.muskokarecycles.ca to fill out a Missed Collection Form.
Blue boxes:
Some of the recycling trucks being used to help fill empty routes have just one loading area for our blue box material — rest assured that materials are still being sorted and recycled properly once unloaded from vehicles.
