‘HEART-BREAKING’ NEWS BRINGS OUT BEST IN CANADIANS
Mark Clairmont | MuskokaTODAY.com
GRAVENHURST — Canadians united apart today in sorrow at the senseless killings in Nova Scotia yesterday are heart-broken as they continue to cope with mounting COVID-19 death toll around the world.
Flags already flying at half staff for the coronavirus victims have more reasons to come together virtually in spirit.
Coast to coast and around the world Canada’s worst mass shooting is heart-breaking news.
Today, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau called it “heart-break upon heart-break.”
He urged his country to stand together as it has since the pandemic wave swept into the furthest corner of the world.
Cottage countries across the country feel the hurt on a more personal level.
They can empathize, while city folk can only sympathize.
Portapique is a cottage country on the east coast; Muskoka is a cottage country in central Ontario.
Both are close-knit rural communities that resemble Cheers — where everyone knows your name.
Six-degrees of separation has nothing to do with the pandemic phenom of social distancing.
Phone-trees are the roots of rural Canada built on party lines and pot-lucks.
People from Portapique to Parry Sound care about each other.
On a day and at a time when an active shooter was deactivated, Canadians were standing up Sunday at noon to show their solidarity for an ongoing tragedy.
Little did we know how united we were.
The #Canada Together social media movement encouraging a show of support Sunday took on new meaning the morning before it.
The days and weeks’ events will reverberate louder Friday night the virtual celebration of life for the Nova Scotia victims that will echo next Sunday at noon.
Let’s hear from you.
Lois Cooper and Mark Clairmont honour Canadians and COVID-19 victims Sunday as part of the national #Together Canada event with their version of “GO’Canada!”
