SIMCOE MUSKOKA — A second patient at RVH has died with COVID-19, and a woman in her 30s is being treated for the virus infection that she appears to have acquired in the community.

There are now nine reported cases of the coronavirus in Simcoe-Muskoka.

She is the ninth reported case in Simcoe-Muskoka said the Simcoe Muskoka District Health Unit (SMDHU).

On Saturday, March 21, they reported the latest fatality was being treated at the Royal Victoria Regional Health Centre.

They say the man his 70s was the region’s third case of COVID-19 under investigation by the health unit, and was a close contact of an individual with COVID-19 who died at RVH on March 11.

They were family members.

Both of these cases were reported publicly within the past week.

“It speaks to the need to be more aware of the seriousness of the current situation than ever and that we, as a community, as organizations and as individuals, need to work together to protect one another,” said Dr. Charles Gardner, SMDHU’s medical officer of health.

The latest case, a woman from Bradford West Gwillimbury, presented to Southlake Regional Health Centre in Newmarket on March 17.

She is in serious condition and, while the investigation is ongoing SMDHU says “this appears to be a community acquired infection.”
