He didn’t just single out local health officials and medical staffs, but also staffs in grocery stores, pharmacies, suppliers, truck drivers and the public for their roles.
He issued the following statement in a release Tuesday afternoon on the COVID-19 crisis:
“I want to thank our public health units, all our medical professionals and their support staff for working so hard to help protect the rest of us through the COVID – 19 crisis.
“I also want to thank the staff in grocery stores, pharmacies and other stores that carry essentials, their suppliers and the truck drivers who collectively are making sure we continue to have access to the things we need.
“And finally I want to thank everyone who has rearranged their lives to take extra precautions to slow the spread of this virus.
He said this situation is very difficult for many people both personally and financially.
“On the personal side, I know it is difficult to be told you can’t visit someone in long-term care or hospital or to be told you need to self-isolate but it is necessary at this time.” And “on the financial side, the Ontario government is working with the Federal government to find ways to offer support.”
More information will be coming about support for workers and small business owners who need the help.
He also reminded everyone they can also find a self-assessment at https://www.ontario.ca/page/2019-novel-coronavirus.
Miller added that there is a lot of unreliable information about the coronavirus on the internet.
He said “please get your information from reputable sources,” such as the Ontario Government’s COVID-19 pagehttps://www.ontario.ca/page/2019-novel-coronavirus, or your local public health unit.
You can reach the Simcoe Muskoka District Health Unit athttps://www.simcoemuskokahealth.org/ or by phone at 1-877-721-7520 or the North Bay Parry Sound Health Unit at https://www.myhealthunit.ca/en/index.asp or by phone at 1-800-563-2808. Contact Telehealth Ontario at 1-866-797-0000 but please know they are receiving a high number of calls so you may have to wait to speak to someone. In case of an emergency, call 911.
“I want to recognize the businesses that are doing everything they can to provide a safe environment for customers, whether that is extra cleaning or things like seniors only hours offered by some of our stores. I also want to thank everyone who is looking out for their friends and neighbours and encourage anyone who is healthy and going grocery shopping to consider offering to pick things up for a senior friend of neighbour.
“That being said, our supply chains for food and other essentials are strong and we are not facing a shortage so there is no need to create stockpiles – please buy what you need but leave enough for everyone else as well.”
He said he and his staff are still available to help; but for everyone’s health and safety he said they are asking that constituents contact them only by email or phone and not come into the offices.
