Driver southbound in northbound lanes struck 3 police cruisers

ORILLIA — Three police cars were damaged by a wrong-way driver on Hwy. 11 Sunday.

Provincial police in have charged a London, Ontario, man after he was finally stopped driving south in the northbound lanes of Highway 11 in Severn Township October 21, 2018, shortly after 3 a.m.

Police were called about the southbouind driver in the northbound lanes near Bayou Road.

Several officers responded and located the wrong way vehicle.

Attempts to stop the vehicle were without success.

After a short pursuit, the vehicle was finally stopped on Laclie Street near Sundial Drive, after three police cruisers were damaged  when police say the male driver intentionally struck the cruisers on several occasions.

There were no injuries resulting from the incident.

The loan male driver identified as Timothy Martyn, 35, of London, Ontario, was arrested and charged by members of the Orillia detachment.

The charges include:

Dangerous operation of a motor vehicle contrary to the Criminal Code of Canada

Flight while pursued by peace officer contrary to the Criminal Code of Canada

Driving while ability impaired – motor vehicle contrary to the Criminal Code of Canada

Possession of property obtained by crime over $5000 contrary to the Criminal Code of Canada

Drive wrong way – divided highway contrary to the Highway Traffic Act

Fail to stop for police contrary to the Highway Traffic Act

The accused was held in custody for a bail hearing at the Ontario Court of Justice in Orillia where they he was released on his own recognizance with his next court appearance scheduled for Nov. 20, 2018.
