$1,200 arts award available for students

BRACEBRIDGE — Students considering the post-secondary costs of arts studies should act fast on this opportunity for an arts bursary.

Visual arts students have until June 9 to apply for this $1,200 MAC award and automatic entry into the summer show.

The Elene J. Freer Art Scholarship is sponsored by Muskoka Arts & Crafts and is a $1,200 cash award for a graduating high school student from Muskoka who is continuing his or her post-secondary education at a recognized university or college.

As a bonus, this award also includes a membership with Muskoka Arts & Crafts and free entry in the Spring Members’ Show, says a release.

To be considered, the student must be in his or her graduating high school year or have graduated high school within the past year.

The application must include a portfolio containing between 10 and 20 works that should be a thoughtful selection of original, self-initiated projects as well as any responses to class assignments the student wishes the committee to consider when assessing the application.

The selected work should be jpg images that show the work to its best advantage and saved on a CD or memory stick.

Other items required include: a letter of intent (500 words) that describes past achievements, short and long-term goals, reasons for pursuing a post-secondary education in the visual arts and the student’s expectations of this education;  a copy of the acceptance letter from the institution; and contact information for the student in Muskoka as well as when attending school.

The deadline to apply is June 9, 2018. Applications may be emailed, mailed or hand delivered to the Chapel Gallery, located at 15 King Street in Bracebridge from Tuesday to Saturday, 10am-1pm and 2pm-5pm.
